Dermabrasion is the mechanical removal of the outer layers of skin.
It is generally used for acne scars as an alternative to fractional laser, laser resurfacing or scar excisions. With the wide choice of lasers it is used less often today.
What to expect
Dermabrasion is performed either under general anesthesia or local anesthesia (injections to numb the skin) with sedation. It is generally an out patient procedure.
Just like conventional laser resurfacing, there is a period of weeping, crusting and oozing from the skin of ten to fourteen days. This is followed by redness for up to six months.
The new surface will be smoother textured. Surface irregularities are reduced or removed.
