Fractional Laser Resurfacing in Newport Beach

Traditional resurfacing procedures remove the outer layers of the skin using laser heat, mechanical abrasion or a mild acid. Fractional laser resurfacing penetrates the deeper layers of the skin, to stimulate the formation of collagen and elastic fibers. Because it treats only a fraction of the skin area, via a pattern of treatment spots, it can treat the skin more deeply, while,\ the skin heals faster, from the surrounding untreated skin.

Who is it for?

Fine to moderate wrinkles are increasingly treated with a fractional laser. (A facelift is needed for the deeper wrinkles and sagging of the skin that occur with aging.) Sometimes both procedures are needed, then the fractional laser is done six weeks to six months after the face lift surgery.

Fair skinned people with sun damage are the commonest candidates, but darker skinned people may also benefit when skin damage has resulted in wrinkles. The pre-treatment regime, and the laser settings are individualized for each patient.

Fractional laser therapy can be used on the neck and chest with only a low risk of scarring. The power settings are lower in these areas, because the blood supply is not as good.

What to expect.

Fractional laser therapy is sometimes performed with some sedation. Additionally local anesthetic creams and nerve blocks help minize the discomfort.

After treatment, the skin has a speckled pattern of red dots. After the skin heals, the face may be pink for one to two months.

Following your laser treatement, it is very important to stay out of the sun or use a sun blocking cream at all times, until the redness has settled. Sun exposure during this time may cause changes in skin color.
